Best known as one of the cornerstone players in American Horror Story (AHS), actress/producer/businessperson Emma Roberts continually seeks out film projects to balance her long-time television role. In 2023, she anchored the film, “Maybe I Do,” a star-studded film that follows two lovers as they get engaged and meet each other’s parents, all of whom enjoy extra-marital bliss with one another.
Building Versatility as an Actress
The romantic comedy role provides a counterpoint to her longstanding role in AHS. Although Roberts has appeared in many horror films, including “Scream 4” and “Scream Queens,” she doesn’t want to end up typecast in only those roles. That determination to act in a variety of roles led her to the role of Michelle, with actor Richard Gere playing her dad and Diane Keaton as her mom. After the birth of her child, Rhodes, Roberts grew even more discerning about the projects she chooses because any role would take time away from parenting.
Adding a Career as a Producer
Acting since 2001, the daughter of actor Eric Roberts grew up around Hollywood personnel although her mother, Kelly Cunningham, reared her in New York state. Close friends with her aunt, actress Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts has had an array of examples to follow in her acting career. Following the examples who also entered the production side of film and TV, Roberts now chooses projects in which she has a hand in their development.
Finding Project Ideas from Her Book Club
An avid reader, she founded the book club Belletrist and champions stories she reads as potential projects. Roberts told MTV that she enjoys having a hand in the projects she works on, something that grew out of her love of reading and youthful curiosity about the making of films and TV shows. The actress added nine production credits to her resume of 62 acting credits, seven of them since 2022.
Parenting in Hollywood
Although she grew up in the limelight, frequently photographed on the red carpet with her dad and aunt, she’s choosing a different path for her son, Rhodes, born December 27, 2020. In his first three years of life, the young mother had only posted two photos revealing his face, and those came once he turned three. Roberts has spoken at length about striving to give her child privacy as he grows up. The actress even called out her mother in 2023 for posting a full-face photo of her son on Instagram without asking first.
Combining Her Roles to Keep Growing
Emma Roberts originally established herself as an actress. Over time, she added producer, then executive producer to her resume. Along the way, she turned her love of reading into a book club, Belletrist. Most recently, she added Mom to her already lengthy resume. Roberts has come a long way since her start as a child actress on Nickelodeon. Only she knows what 2024 holds for her, though, because this goal-setting, goal-achieving individual hasn’t revealed her plans for the year yet.
